Six-year-old Laylah McDow has her father, Roy,
to thank for the new kidney in her abdomen. On
November 30, 2011, Laylah became the first child
to have a kidney transplant at Methodist Children’s
Hospital, a campus of Methodist Hospital. Laylah
was born prematurely and has had kidney problems
her entire life. She says the new kidney gives her
lots more energy to go to school, play with her
baby brother and drive her Barbie car.

and
Methodist Texsan Hospital, both campuses of Meth-
odist Hospital, have launched Joint Replacement
academies that combine the expertise of the surgical
team with a new approach to rehabilitation and re-
covery. The program was first established at Northeast
Methodist last year.
The Joint Replacement Academy concept approaches
the total joint replacement surgical experience in a whole
new way, creating a partnership among the patient,
doctor and hospital. Because an informed patient can
more fully participate in his or her own care and recov-
ery, we focus on engaging and educating our patients
throughout the entire process—from doctor’s office visit
to post-discharge.

NEW EXPERIENCE FOR JOINT
REPLACEMENT PATIENTS
Here are some great comments from
patients who have “graduated” from the
Academy at Northeast Methodist Hospital:
■
“Friendly atmosphere, service and
professionalism...loved the community
lunches and therapy…great idea…takes
the anxiety and questions out of the
surgery...Joint Academy provided all the
pre- and post-op information and care one
would want or expect.”
—J. P.
But don’t just take our word for it
■
“The joint replacement was wonderful
for the relief of my pain…all of the people
I came in contact with at the hospital
were wonderful”
—T. C.
■
“The total experience from the time I
walked in the door and then thru pre-op,
post-op and discharge, I felt like they
weren’t just going thru the motions but
really care on a personal/friend basis.”
—R. V.
■
“I liked starting therapy right away.
Group therapy was a bonus. It lets you
know you’re not the only one going
through the recovery. Keep up the good
work.”
—M. W.
And here are comments from Method-
ist Texsan Hospital Joint Replacement
Academy graduates:
■
“The nurses and staff that took care
of me were professional, attentive,
friendly and very caring. You have first-
rate, quality nurses leading the ortho
team. They went way beyond the call
of duty. Especially by providing aroma-
therapy for us every afternoon in our
rooms!”
—Jill
■
“The pre-op team visited with (my
wife) and fully explained the pending
procedure…all possible details were
fully attended to…The nursing staff was
extremely caring, exercised outstand-
ing bedside manner and promptness in
attending to my wife’s medical needs.”
—R. G.
