There’s an old
Southern saying
my family uses:
“Just roll it off
your tail feath-
ers.” I’m not sure
where it came
from; I would
imagine it’s from
the same book as
“Bless yer heart”
or “I’m fixin’ to.”
Nonetheless, it’s used regularly in my fam-
ily’s day-to-day conversations. It means:
When someone has upset you, it’s best to
forgive, forget and move on. In its most
literal translation, it means to react as
a duck would to a drop of water on its
back—let it roll off your tail feathers and
keep walking.
As silly as it may sound, there must
be something to this old Southern say-
ing, right? You can’t always understand
why people do things that upset you. For
example, why did the driver in the con-
vertible cut you off on your way to work
this morning? Why did your colleague
stop whispering when you walked by?
Why did your daughter arrive 30 minutes
late for Thanksgiving dinner? Or why did
your boyfriend break up with you in a
text message?
Before becoming angry or hurt, con-
sider that you just don’t know the answer
to the question, “Why?” Maybe the driver
in the convertible was rushing his wife to
the hospital. Your colleague was confiding
in another about a personal matter she
doesn’t want made public. Your daughter
worked a double shift and slept through
her alarm clock. And God has a better
idea for the man you should spend your
life with.
My point is, before you get upset over
someone else’s actions, it is important
to consider other scenarios. Rather than
dwelling on your assumptions, move on
with a smile. People are only human, and
we will never understand why we do some
of the things we do. Don’t let the actions of
others ruin your perfect day. Nineteenth-
century philosopher Soren Kierkegaard
once wrote, “Life can only be understood
backwards, but it must be lived forward.”
And as my grandparents would say,
“Just roll it off your tail feathers.”
