AS PART OF
a historic expansion to serve the health-
care needs of the growing San Antonio community,
Methodist Children’s Hospital, a campus of Methodist
Hospital, has added 15 new private rooms to its dedi-
cated children’s Emergency Department and will soon
add 16 rooms to its Neonatal ICU (NICU) ahead of the
new seven-story tower opening this winter.
Unlike most children’s hospitals, all 40 ER rooms
at Methodist Children’s Hospital are private, includ-
ing two dedicated trauma rooms and two specialized
isolation rooms for the most vulnerable and immuno-
compromised patients.
“Our pediatric Emergency Department has state-
of-the-art technology designed to address the special
needs of children, from small bumps to serious emer-
gencies,” said
Robert Lenza,
Chief Executive Officer,
“but with this expansion we’ve also put a focus on the
patient and family experience by creating a beautiful
and healing environment.”
Despite being one of the busiest children’s emer-
gency departments in the country, with almost 70,000
visits last year, the average ER wait time is usually less
than 10 minutes. With the addition of 15 new private
rooms, the Methodist Children’s Hospital Emergency
Department should decrease wait times even further.
Valet services are also available.
Already the largest NICU in the region, the addition
of 16 new beds will bring the total number to 92, offer-
ing more privacy to the families of infants dealing with
a wide-range of concerns, such as prematurity, cardiac
issues, and general or neurosurgery needs.
“Our goal is to deliver world-class care to our tiniest
patients while providing their families with a comfort-
able space during a difficult time,” said Lenza. “We’re
meeting these milestones to serve the needs of chil-
dren. This is great for the community, and we’re hon-
ored to be a part of its growth.”
