Te team recently came together on a Sunday afernoon in April to save Chase Carlson, a 2 -year-old boy who fell into a backyard pool.

STEM CELLS TO THE RESCUE Methodist Children’s Hospital has the third largest pediatric blood and marrow stem cell transplant program in the nation. Fami-lies in our area are fortunate to have a dedicated team of physician specialists at Methodist Children’s Hospital who treat diseases of the blood (such as leukemia, lymphomas and other immunologic
diseases, including aplastic anemia and sickle cell disease) with stem cells from bone marrow and the umbilical cords of newborns.

“With cord blood cells, patients do not have to be a perfect match,” says Ka Wah Chan, MD, medical director of the Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplant Program at Methodist Children’s Hospital. “With more than half of our patients being Hispanic, fnding direct matches can be challenging. Cord blood ofers an efective option in their treatment.”
SPECIAL LITTLE HEARTS Te Methodist Children’s Heart Institute team performs a complete range of surgeries for children born with heart defects. Tese surgeries include minimally invasive septal defect repairs and complex single ventricle repairs. Te team also ofers treatment for arrhythmia, heart failure, mechanical support and complete thoracic services, including chest wall reconstruction.
INTENSIVE CARING As with many of the hospital’s services, the pediatric intensive care unit is at the center of providing care to children afer traumatic illness or injury, surgery, or during severe respiratory illnesses and complications from asthma. Board-certifed pediatric intensive care physicians are on duty around the clock to provide the highest level of critical care in this 17 -bed unit, which features the latest technologically advanced equipment for monitoring pa-tient care and life support.
FOR FRAGILE NEWBORNS Methodist Children’s Hospital has the highest level of accreditation that can be achieved for its Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Because of this accreditation, Method-ist Children’s Hospital can treat infants born at 22 to 23 weeks gestation as well
as infants who are born with complex ill-nesses, such as congenital heart disease. As a major referral center in this re-gion, Methodist Children’s Hospital has a transport team on standby 24/7 to ensure the highest level of care. In many cases, the transport team is dispatched while a nurse is still receiving information about the patient.
Methodist AirCare provides helicopter transport service throughout the region for newborns, expectant moms experiencing difcult pregnancies, and children and adults of all ages who require the higher level of care than is available in their own communities.
