Methodist Healthcare System | Keeping Well | Winter 2018

Keeping well My Mom would always tell me, “Ev- ery day is a good day; some days are just better than others.” Of course, that is not what I want to hear when I am having a terrible day and want to wallow in my self-pity, but that is what moms are for. To remind you of those life lessons. As my daughter reaches the tween years, I find myself telling her the same thing. Teen angst is a seri- ous thing, and I for- got how dramatic a day in t he l i fe of a teen can be. I know my daughter d o e s n’ t get it yet. But I do. Not too long ago, I went to my car on a Monday morning, only to find I not only needed gas, but my tire had a screw in it. As I sat in the tire store, waiting for my tire to be re- paired, I scrolled through Facebook, and I was reminded that it was the anniversary of our good friends’ baby’s passing. My heart sank. I was so fixated on my problems that I wasn’t thinking how lucky I am. It is a good day. I am alive. I need to be thankful I have a car and that I can afford the gas to put in the car. Sometimes we forget. We complain about things that so many don’t have and that we take for granted. Next time you are stuck in traf- fic or the pipe bursts in your house, remember how lucky you are. I know it is sometimes hard to remember how much we have, because there is always someone with more. But remember, there is always someone with less too. Be thankful and remember that every day is a good day! I’ve searched to see to whom that quote is attrib- uted, to no avail, so I apologize for not crediting them. Participants of the first Monster Dash start strong for the 5K Fun Run and Walk. The event was sponsored by Methodist Texsan Hospital and benefited the American Heart Association’s Heart Ball. In the pre-dawn hours of Saturday, Oct. 28, ghosts, goblins, ghouls—along with pirates, werewolves, superheroes, and several super dogs—began gathering under the portico of Methodist Texsan Hospital, a campus of Methodist Hospital. The occasion was the first-ever Monster Dash 5K Fun Run and Walk , followed by the first-ever Monster Dash Kids Bash ! Methodist Texsan’s employees came up with the idea for the back-to-back events as one more way this 120-bed, all private rooms hospital could reach out to the community. Working with the city staff of Balcones Heights, the magnificent mile city-within- a-city located just inside Loop 410, a 3.1-mile route was planned. On race day, off-duty police officers lined the course that crossed Fredericksburg Road and wound through the streets of the charming neighborhood. As Monster Dash 5K participants finished back at the starting point, they found the front grounds of Methodist Texsan Hospital transformed into a wonderland of fun activities for kids from 2 to 10. The slime-making station was the hands-down fa- vorite, followed closely by the Cupcake Walks and Doughnut Tower Station. Two Silver Dancers from the San Antonio Spurs were there for photo-taking opportunities for kids, adults, and families! “What better way to celebrate our employees, our community, and cardiac and orthopedic health than by hosting the first-ever 5K Fun Run and Walk through Balcones Heights?” said CEO Scott Davis . “The Monster Dash Kids Bash was a natural follow-up for the whole family to enjoy.” Proceeds from the events supported the American Heart Association’s Heart Ball.
